The Lane Under Hoarfrost

A quiet country lane runs beneath trees white with frost towards a misty clearing.

Let your eyes wander

  1. Begin with the quiet lane, running straight ahead into the white wood.
  2. Its edges are dusted with frost, and fallen brown leaves show through along the verges.
  3. Overhead, every branch and twig is coated in white rime, so the trees meet like an arch of lace.
  4. Here and there, a few copper beech leaves still cling on, small spots of warmth in the white.
  5. On the right, the dark trunk of an old tree shows through the frosted twigs.
  6. Far down the lane, two small brown birds seem to be resting on the road.
  7. At the very end, one broad old tree stands in the mist, its branches spread wide.
  8. Beyond it, the wood fades into pale white fog.

There is no last thing to find. Look again wherever your eyes would like to rest, or close them and keep the picture.

Keep going

Nothing here needs finishing. Every door leads somewhere, and the last one is always darker than this.
