Tropical Forest with Monkeys
Monkeys rest and dangle among lilies, red leaves and feathery palms in Rousseau’s quiet painted jungle.
Let your eyes wander
- Begin with the grey monkey sitting among the white lilies, looking straight out at you.
- Below it on the right, a russet monkey sits on a pale stone at the water’s edge, a long thin stick in its hand.
- High in the tree on the right, two orange monkeys hang by their arms from the branches.
- Beside them, yellow flowers open along the branches like small flames.
- In the shadowy leaves at the upper left, a fourth monkey is half hidden, almost the same grey as the branch.
- The bank of deep red leaves along the bottom has been painted one leaf at a time.
- Behind everything, pale green hills rise softly under a quiet sky.
- In the bottom right corner, the painter has signed his name and the year in pale green.
There is no last thing to find. Look again wherever your eyes would like to rest, or close them and keep the picture.
